KISS ME DEADLY (CRITERION BLU): Honestly, I'm not sure if I've seen this or not. I have a feeling that I saw it when I was younger but I can't remember a single thing about it. What I do know is that I'm currently obsessed with Black & White crime and I am dying to check out this Criterion Blu of Mike Hammer's first cinematic adventure. Check out Criterion's Three Reasons Video below for some pretty serious smacks and thwacks from Ralph Meeker.
Buy!
THE ADJUSTMENT BUREAU: This is a great Behind-The-Curtain movie and definitely one of my favorite movies of 2011 so far. A real surprise, I'm always weary of Philip K Dick adaptations since even when they are good (Blade Runner, Total Recall) they manage to be nothing like the original story. Adjustment Bureau takes plenty of liberties with Dick's work but I do feel it gets the original's intent. Another strong performance from Matt Damon and after this & his brilliant, mad work in True Grit I'm rediscovering my Team America MATT DAMON! love. Plus, Terrance Stamp is all kinds of badass here.
UNKNOWN: People really seem to enjoy Liam Neeson's Taken. I enjoyed it but thought it pulled its punches. Unknown still doesn't go Balls-Out Neeson like I want, but it comes pretty darn close for a PG-13 flick and I definitely appreciated it more than Taken. I just love Action Hero Neeson and I could watch him headbutt mysterious goons all day long.
RIO CONCHOS/TAKE A HARD RIDE (WILD WEST COLLECTION): Shout Factory delivers another much-anticipated double feature. Haven't seen Rio Conchos but I look forward to seeing "All American" Jim Brown in his big screen debut. I have seen Take A Hard Ride and it's a highly entertaining blaxploitation Western starring Fred "The Hammer" Williamson, Jim Brown, Jim Kelly, and Lee Van Cleef.
Rent!
THE EAGLE: I'm not gonna run out to the Redbox or even put it on my Netflix cue anytime soon, but I am a little curious about this Roman teen adventure. I can't stand Channing Tatum or Jaime Bell for that matter, but I do like this kinda sword & sandal adventure. My guess is that I'll be dreaming of Centurion while watching, but I've also heard some decent stuff....you know, I'm not really selling myself to hard on this flick.
CEDAR RAPIDS: Ed Helm is a funny guy. I really like John C Reilly. And the below trailer makes me laugh. I'll check it out.
ELEKTRA LUXX: I really did not like Women in Trouble for which this is a pseudo sequel, but I really like Carla Gugino and I'll pretty much watch anything that puts her in the forefront. Here she plays the titular porn star trying to regain control of her life. Plus, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Timothy Olyphant, and a dead Josh Brolin. We love that right? The trailer ain't that hot though.
Avoid!
THE WOMEN IN CAGES COLLECTION (STANDARD DEFINITION): No, I'm not telling you that this trilogy of Roger Corman exploitation is crap. Quite the opposite--well, not quite, it's only okay Pam Grier kickin' ass action but okay Pam Grier is still awesome Pam Grier! No, you should avoid this Women In Cages collection cuz in August Shout Factory is releasing it on Blu. Don't waste your time on the standard.
