"I'm Going To Show You Something Beautiful..." Age of Ultron Trailer Wins The Internet!

Yowza.  The troubling thing about working nights, is that sometimes you come home after a long day, and some bit of movie news has just absolutely devastated the internet in your absence (something that's been happening more often than not around ITMOD lately, sorry folks).  Yesterday, that news was the Age of Ultron trailer.  James Spader's gargley robotic voice promises early on "something beautiful" and Joss Whedon certainly delivers the goods.  Most of the trailer is what we saw at this year's San Diego Comic Con (minus a jovial cocktail party sequence, but Marvel doesn't want to confuse the Empire Strikes Back All-Shit-About-To-Break-Loose doom & gloom of the Ultron plot).  Still, now we can watch it over and over and over again and drool and drool and drool.

HULKBUSTER!  Yes.  We know internet, it is the coolest.  Just another geek miracle Marvel has been blessing fanboys since 2008.  But as much as I love seeing these two titans go at it in Wakanda (rumor mill!), the trailer wins my soul with James Spader's vocal talents - AND! not just because we're crazed Boston Legal fans around these parts.  The Evolution of Ultron from Iron Legion drone to genocidal world conqueror will finally deliver upon the Marvel Cinematic Universe a screen villain worthy of our fear.  I love Loki as much as the next tumblr addict, but he's more putz than terror, and the other bad guy stand-ins have mostly been one dimensional bores.  Ultron here is going to tear The Avengers apart.  Just look at poor cowering Bruce Banner, or that beautiful wide shot of the team separated aboard the quinjet.  Avengers 2 is not going to leave our heroes all buddy-buddy.  Captain America 3 - Civil War is coming after all.  When I left the theater in 2012, The Avengers gave me a giddy buzz of joy.  I imagine when I exit from Age of Ultron that buzz will still be there, but it's going to be birthed from a tremendous emotional bummer.  Not so much of a prediction here, but Avengers 2 is gonna make ya hurt, and there will be very little fist pumping glee from the audience...except for those masochists out there.  Here's hoping (always dangerous in the fan community, stop predicting/anticipating your desires and just enjoy the movies Brad!) that Avengers 3 will see the team come back together in a crowd pleasing Guardians of the Galaxy mashup against Thanos & his Infinity Gauntlet.  Marvel will mic-drop and bow out of the movie making business for good.  Ha.

Dork Art: Austin Purser’s Travel Posters

I love retro travel posters.  There’s a wonderful, hopeful exuberance to their simplistic and colorful technique.  They put me in a certain mood, a mood I enjoy living in.

So, seeing these awesome retro-style travel posters to various literary lands and worlds is quite nice.  I think Austin Purser has captured the flavor quite well, and I like the variety of locations he’s chosen.

Anyone looking for a Christmas present for this Dork could sure do worse (hint: I'd love to see Yuggoth this time of year).

Cap Jumps Into Battle!

We've got two days till the Teaser Trailer hits the web, but I'm already jazzed thanks to this killer comic book poster.  Sure, it should be illustration, but that's a bitch-rant I'm tired of spewing.  I just love the image of Cap preparing to jump into battle in our Nation's Capital.  Anthony Russo & Joe Russo are still questionable commodities, but I loved what little I saw at this year's Comic Con.  Hopefully the teaser footage will feature the Elevator brawl we got to see there - Chris Evans kicking Frank Grillo's ass.  I like the first film quite a bit despite it's rushjob climax, but hopefully we can get some satisfying World War II closure in the sequel.

New Robocop Makes His First Move

A few days ago the first trailer for the Robocop remake dropped, and today we get the first poster.  I don't want to go all Internet hatey over it (this ain't Batfleck), but I am certainly not optimistic for this February release.  I've got a few friends who tell me Jose Padilha is a madman for action with his Elite Squad movies, but the below trailer just screams Total Recall remake.  You know, brilliant Verhoeven splatterfest/satire cleaned up & polished for a bored contemporary audience.  No thank you.  You can toss in all the Michael Keaton, Sam Jackson, and Gary Oldman you want - The Killing's Joel Kinnamen simply seems confused.  I want to believe...

Transformers - Age of Extinction

One Summer down, time to start preparing for the next one.  I wouldn't go so far as to call myself a Transformers apologist (I don't really believe in Guilty Pleasures - Own Your Love!), but as much as I recognize the problems of the Michael Bay trilogy, I really just get giddy watching all the overwrought CG catastrophe.  And I hear this next one has Dinobots.  DINOBOTS!!!!!!!  Yes!  And the trade of Shia LaBeouf for Mark Wahlberg is decent - sure, The Rock would have been better but Dwayne can't save every franchise.

Dork Art: Wrong's Got Dog On The Brains

And this is the best poster yet for Quentin Dupieux's Rubber follow-up, Wrong.  Even after a couple trailers, I still don't know what the hell this movie is about and I want to keep it that way.  It's got something to do with dognapping and a groovy William Fichtner.  Do you really need more, info?  I don't think Matt will argue with me, this is one of ITMOD's eagerly anticipated films of 2013.

Poster: Hitchcock

I'm definitely curious about this Hitch bio (as well as HBO's competing Toby Jones flick), but the other part of me wonders if there is a compelling story to be told regarding the production of Psycho.  I do prefer the focussed timeline of the story rather than a "Hitch, This Is Your Life" epic, but is there a film here that needs to be told?  Wouldn't you rather just watch Pscyho again?  Still need to see a trailer before I get all in a huff.

Beware The Batman

Here's the new poster for the upcoming CGI cartoon, Beware The Batman.  I will always prefer traditional animation over CG (I'm just an old fogey that way), but I definitley dig the art deco Rocketeer style of this image.  And another part of me is still pretty gosh darn sad that Brave and the Bold is no more.  This new show seems to be grasping for the glory days of Bruce Timm's 90s Animated Series and all I have to say to that is, "Good Luck fellas."  Below is the latest press release:

A cool, new take on the classic Dark Knight franchise, ‘Beware the Batman’ incorporates Batman’s core characters with a rogues gallery of new villains not previously seen in animated form.

Along with backup from ex-secret agent Alfred and lethal swordstress Katana, the Dark Knight faces the twisted machinations of Gotham City’s criminal underworld led by the likes of Anarky, Professor Pyg, Mister Toad and Magpie.

Produced by Warner Bros. Animation, this action-packed detective thriller deftly redefines what we have come to know as a “Batman show.” Featuring cutting-edge CGI visuals to match the intricate twists and turns of the narrative, Batman steps out of the shadows and into the spotlight for an entirely new generation of fans.

With WBA’s Sam Register executive producing, and Batman Beyond’s Glen Murakami and Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated’s Mitch Watson producing, Beware the Batman, based on characters from DC Comics, is coming soon to Cartoon Network!

The Wolverine: Teaser Poster?

Is this a leaked image of the first teaser poster for James Mangold's The Wolverine?  Do I care?  Not really.  Don't you guys remember this:

Clip/Trailer: BRAVE, I Am Woman!

I love this trailer/clip for Brave, the latest Pixar film that peaks my interest in the same way that my current favorite Pixar flick, UP did when the first images from that film started to hit the interwebs.  The final shot of Meredith nose-to-nose with her mother is rather badass if you ask me.

Poster: Resident Evil Part V!

The first two teaser posters for Resident Evil: Retribution have arrived and they promise Global terror.  Frankly, I could watch Milla kick zombie ass in these silly little movies every year for the rest of my life. Just keep it going, I'll keep watching.  And I'm really looking forward to blitzing through the other four films before checking out the new one.

Dork Art: The Movie Posters of Harold Seroy

I just read this interesting article (click here) about Harold Seroy and the movie posters he painted for several classic films.  In this day of photoshopped heads, it's nice to look back and see what it was like when artists were involved.

New Prometheus Poster

OK, so I'm guessing that Prometheus is going to end up pretty high on my 'most anticipated' list for next year.  I'm a Ridley Scott fan, even if his recent years haven't been so great.  And I'm always a little hopeful for cool science fiction movies.  I'm really curious to see what this one is all about.  From rumors of it being some kind of a prequel to Alien, or at least set in the same universe, to the extremely odd, but interesting cast.  It's just got my curiosity all in a flutter.  So, here's the latest poster image for the film:

Not really the most visually appealing or interesting thing.  But, like the details on the movie, it's dark and vague.

New Trailer & Poster: Battleship

Still boggles the mind that this movie is happening.  But I guess for every Dork miracle like The Avengers we gotta accept ridiculous nonsense like Peter Berg's Battleship.  The new trailer appears below and it seems to reveal a short lifespan for Liam Neeson (I'm not sure if I should be sad for us or happy that he's not going to be seriously tainted for too long by these proceedings).  But yeah, I'm still gonna see this malarky and that makes me a hypocrite and a horrible fan of cinema.

Corman's World

Roger Corman is a Dork Hero.  The man has produced some of my very favorite bits of bongo mondo exploitation cinema and has discovered (or groomed) some of cinema's greats--just look at that list of names on the side of the poster above.  Movies would be a very different world without Roger Corman.  Well, next month will see the limited release (and I'm guessing really limited) of the Corman lovefest, Corman's World.  Below is a brief glimpse of the film focusing on the recent stint of Dinosharks and Mega Piranhas.  I don't know if I'll get a chance to see this on the big screen but I'll definitely buy the DVD and stick it next to my other Corman classics.

Rob Zombie's Lords of Salem

Shock Till You Drop has revealed the poster for Rob Zombie's latest, The Lords of Salem.  I dig the art.  Creepy Ken Russell Devilsish...well, not really, but that's what it makes me think of.  Honestly, I could care less about this film.  I loved, loved, loved The Devil's Rejects but I really can't stand either of his Halloween or House of 1000 Corpses.  I'll check it out but I'm also not holding my breath.

Dork Art: Drive

Found via Geek Tyrant, here is another keeper from the good folks over at Needle Design.  Drive is definitely my film obsession of the week; haven't been able to get it out of my head and I've been driving around in my car pumping the soundtrack into my brain.  What I love about the print above is that evokes the novels of Richard Stark and books like it.  Ryan Gosling's Driver could easliy be from the same world as Parker.  The print measures 420mm x 297mm (British!) and will cost you £25.00 (British!).

You Kids and Your Modern Movie Posters!

Thanks to the crazy people over at CRACKED.com for this article about repetitive movie poster images.

I know we here at In the Mouth of Dorkness are personally tired of the 90s style "heads" posters.  Please, Nebulous Film Industry, stop making posters featuring the heads of the lead actors, either in pairs, in arcs, or as dominating, full frame images.  Please stop.

Personally, I'd like to see more interesting, dynamic movie posters, that hopefully capture some aspect of either the plot, the concept, or the spirit of the film.  You'll notice, none of the above posters really give you any kind of idea about what the film is or what it's like.  It's just faces.  There have been some fairly cool, striking, and evocative posters in recent years, though.  I'd just like to see more.

Yeah, it sucked.  But a cool image.
