DORK ART: Tyler's Stout's Attack The Block & Drive

Head on over to Slash Film for a nifty little interview with Mondo artist Tyler Stout.  There he discusses his new gallery show as well as the two prints seen above.  The Drive image is cool, but the Attack The Block is astonishing.  It's been too long since I've watched that flick; seriously needs a revisit.

Dork Art: The Rest of Mondo's Oscars

I'm still processing last night's Awards Show.  You had your predicted winners (Argo, Daniel Day-Lewis) and a couple of upsets (Christoph Waltz, Quentin Tarantino), and then you had all that uncomfortable standup from Seth MacFarlane - I'm still trying to figure out if I hated him as host or loved him...I'm leaning toward's Ben Affleck's obvious Seth-Hate.  But the real frustration of the night came from the constant Mondo disappointment.  I don't even know why I bothered, but when I saw these Django posters go live I was scrambling to score some prints.  I came real darn close (I think) to sneaking away with a Rich Kelly Django, but lost out at the point of payment.  Damn.

Setting that dork sadness aside, I gotta say that the crop of prints revealed last night are some of Mondo's finest.  I love the Stout & Kelly of course, nothing new there - they're always excellent.  Kilian Eng's Argo is easily my favorite with it's Jack Kirby lovefest.  I just wish more of this bizarro subplot was explored in the film.  David Peterson's Brave print is even stronger than the actual film.  More of this image and less of the mother/daughter shenanigans and you could have had a real classic and not just a Just Cuz Oscar winner.

Dork Art: Tyler Stout's Reservoir Dogs

Ok fellow sadomasochists, it's the time again!  Tomorrow, at a no-doubt infuriatingly random time, Mondo will be releasing Tyler Stout's latest cinematic celebration.  The regular 24 x 36 Reservoir Dogs print will set you back $60 if you're lucky and the variant (you don't have a snowball's chance) will cost ya $110.  Sigh.  I know it's probably futile, but I'm gonna give it a go.  Reservoir Dogs was the film that turned me into the cinephile I am today.  Before Mr. Orange bled all over Mr. White the only kind of silver screen nirvana I knew was the Star Wars trilogy.  Reservoir Dogs was my first step into film geek maturity.  And I need this print on my kitchen wall.

Dork Art: More Mondo Avengers

24 x 36 Phantom City Creative

24 x 36 Ken Taylor

24 x 36 Kevin Tong

24 x 36 Variant

More Avengers prints from the good folks over at Mondo.  But I gotta say, I'm kinda underwhelmed with what we've been seeing from them in regards to Marvel's monster team up spectacular.  Their pretty and all, but they're not as stunning as say the previous Planet of the Apes wave or their Star Wars and Star Trek licenses.  I'm still betting on a Tyler Stout main Avengers print and I've got my fingers crossed for a special Nick Fury poster.  And there's still no sight of a Thor print.

Dork Art: The Mondo Gallery

Wizard World has a brief little article detailing the opening of the Mondo Gallery, but more importantly they have a bunch of shots of the art being unveiled tonight.  Still working out what piece matches with what artist, but there is some pretty (typically) beautiful stuff here.  Not only do we get to see the varient of the Tyler Stout Wrath of Khan print, but also some cool Fly & Body Snatchers portraits from Rich Kelly.  Love it.  And yeah, that Ming...it rules.

DorkArt: Tyler Stout's Wrath of Khan!

Badass Digest has unveiled this Amazing! Tyler Stout print of my fifth favorite film of all time, Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan and I am here to announce that I will do pretty much anything to get this bad boy up on my apartment wall.  So damn cool and it would look perfect next to my Mondo Space Seed print.  What makes this poster special (besides it's general vibe of incredible) is that it's release coincides with the opening of the Mondo Gallery in Austin, Texas.  I was a little jealous about the folks participating right now in SXSW but now I've seen this I'm positively enraged with jealously.  Some one down there score me a copy, please cuz who knows how hard it's gonna be to snag it online.

Dork Art: Death Wish

Just a few days ago, The Grey director Joe Carnahan let the world know via Twitter that he's signed on to direct a Death Wish remake.  I definitely dig Carnahan's films and I love the hell outta the original Death Wish series, but I'm not so sure I need a new version of this story.  It's simple enough where one could run off with a very different take on the style/narrative so I'm not freaking out or anything.  Besides, I like the cut of Carnahan's Tweets' gib:

"Guys. I’m doing ‘Death Wish.’ But this version is a re-imagining of the book and set in present day Los Angeles. The L.A. of ‘Collateral.’ It’s on buses, cabs, metro trains. I want to show an unseen version of L.A. L.A. on foot. Prowling. Hunting. The vast emptiness of downtown. … Refn did a phenomenal job shooting L.A. It took on a different dimension. That’s the key. … The only role I’m writing in ‘Death Wish’ which will mark the ONE time I’ve ever written exclusively for an actor, will be for @FrankGrillo."

                                        Bronson                                      Grillo

Well, now Mondo just posted the below picture on their tumblr page.  A quick Tyler Stout Charles Bronson!  This gets me salivating at the very notion of a Stout Death Wish Mondo print.  Want, want, want.  Of course, if it was anything like today's Drive release I won't have a holy heck of snagging one.

A Fistful of Mondo (Brad's Picks) + Justin Ishmael Interview

It should not be any kind of news that I am a huge supporter/fan of Mondo.  Heck, I'm kinda worried ITMOD has become yet another advertising venue for the Austin based company.  But I started collecting their prints back in 2010 with Methanie Studios' The Dirty Dozen and I've slowly been wallpapering my apartment with their fabulous artwork.  Collider recently posted an interview with Mondo frontman Justin Ishmael and you can watch that at the very bottom.  But before you listen to the man, I wanted to give you my favorite Mondo pieces from this past year.  As studio posters get weaker Mondo manages to show them what's what with every license they get their hands on.

5.  Martin Ansin's The Mummy:  I put my nose two inches away from the woodcut variant of this beautiful piece while at last year's San Diego Comic Con, and I came just as close to purchasing it for myself.  But in the pleasure mania of the convention I just wasn't sure what I wanted to blow my money on and just as I was making my mind up to snag this sucker it was gone...sigh.

4.  Jeff Proctor's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre:  Now, here's a print I did manage to get my hands on and it now hangs soundly above my Marvel hardcover bookcase.  And it's probably the one Mondo print that gets me the most into trouble with visiting guests.  Thankfully, my wife thinks it's beautiful and I'm one lucky husband to have snagged a wife as sick a puppy as me.

3.  Drew Struzan's Frankenstein:  This was probably the Mondo event of the whole year, dragging frustrated illustrator Drew Struzan into their fold of top tier artists.  And I didn't have a chance in hell of scoring a copy in the twenty or thirty seconds it took for the poster to sell out.  The only reason this isn't my top pick is cuz the films below are a little closer to my heart than Frankenstein.  Don't get me wrong, it's a masterpiece of Universal Monster cinema but it's no Wolf Man...blasphemy?  So sue me.

2.  Tyler Stout's Assault on Precinct 13:  One of my all-time favorite low-budget action films, John Carpenter's Assault on Precinct 13 gets the royal treatment from Mondo favorite Tyler Stout and I think this just might be the best print from the man.   It doesn't quite have the typical Stout collage layout and Austin Stoker has never looked so Badass.  And yes!  I actually managed to score a copy of this one and it looks beautiful next to my Mondo Buck Banzai poster above the living room couch.

1.  Olly Moss' An American Werewolf in London:  Done for one of Mondo's Mystery Movie nights, I keep hoping they'll throw it up on their site sometime this year.  But I'm not holding my breath.  Currently, on Ebay, you can get one for as low as $199.  Sigh.  One day, you will be mine.

Dork Art: 6 Mondo Captain America Posters For Comic Con

Oh man oh man.  These are some pretty phenomenal prints from Mondo.  The muted Tyler Stout print second from the top is probably my favorite, although Olly Moss' Hydra Propaganda poster at the very bottom is totally badass.  And the two Eric Tan's in the middle sure are pretty too.  Seriously doubt I'll be able to get my grubby little hands on any of these at Mondo's Booth #433 but I'll do my darndest.

Dork Art: Mondo Cap! Mondo Transformers 3!

This Wednesday you better hit up your local comic shop cuz the fourth issue of the prequel comic Captain America: First Avenger has one badass cover supplied by Mondo and artist Tyler Stout.  I think this is some seriously cool news, especially for all you Mondo fans like me.  App Games, VHS Releases, and now Comics.  Mondo is stretching out into all kinds of formats and I can't wait to see them take over Pop Culture.

As for their poster line, well that's still kickin' butt too.  Below you'll see their latest.  Transformers: Dark of the Moon comes to you from artist Jesse Phillips and will be released this Wednesday on the Mondo website.      Both the standard and the varient measure 18 x 36.
