Comic Review: Athos in America
The crazy Norwegian strikes again with this collection of funny, bent, and oddly melancholy tales. Jason’s stories are superficially very amusing, but also deeply painful. The Cat From Heaven and Tom Waits on the Moon are both grim visions of what love can do to us. Athos in America revisit’s the Last Musketeer before his brush with Ming the Merciless, examining not only his lost glory, but his alienation in a foreign land.
His artwork, along with Hubert’s coloring are perfect complements to the quiet grimness and morbid joy. His animal headed characters express as much emotion in their slumped shoulders and lowered eyes as any actor.
My thanks to co-Dork Brad and the folks at Big Planet Comics in Vienna for turning me on to this crazy cat. Jason is a new favorite, and I can’t wait to read more.
