A Fistful of Revolution! (Matt’s Picks)
With Rise of the Planet of the Apes coming out this week, we figured we’d mention a few of our favorite film revolutions. I’m not especially excited about this film, as it looks typically anti-science. But then, how many pro-science films have you seen recently?
5. Dan Freeman’s Long Game (The Spook Who Sat by the Door): Soft spoken, but deadly, Freeman has a plan and he takes his time in making it work. Like a master chess player, he does what needs to be done to set his pieces in place for the ultimate win.
4. Paul Kersey’s Urban Renewal (Death Wish 3): When an army of hoodlums rules a New York City neighborhood with fear and violence, a certain vengeful man is the spark that ignites a fire of freedom among the huddled residents.
3. Sam Lowry’s War with Red Tape (Brazil): Mild mannered pencil pusher and momma’s boy, Sam, just wants to stay the course and live his life in the nightmare towers of modern civilization. He doesn’t want to rock the boat. But, when forces beyond his control begin to invade his life, in the form of his dream woman, a crazy adventure-repair-man, and a dead bug, he takes the fight home.
2. Spartacus’ Wild March (Spartacus): Don’t mess with this guy. And if you’re going to mess with him, don’t train him to be a killer first. With his army of angry gladiators, Spatacus gives those Romans what for.
1. Caesar’s Ape Revolt (Conquest of the Planet of the Apes): They killed his parents. They killed his best friend. They enslaved his fellow apes. And finally, Caesar has had enough. A talking ape from the future, he is uniquely positioned to lead his fellows in bloody revolt against an Orwellian society. The theatrical cut’s ending leaves us on a high note. Maybe peace is possible. The original cut gives no such respite.
